We couldn't have asked for a nicer day for West Park's Sports Car Rally on Sunday. 14 Sports Cars, customers and friends of West Park's toured the Pembina Valley along scenic country roads that wound their way up and down the hills. We stopped for coffee and doughnuts in the park and ended our evening with a delicious dinner and good conversation at Nora's Cafe in Gretna. Thank you to our sports car customers for your support. Gretna Hot Spot Festival

GM Set to Reclaim No. 1 Spot from Toyota

NEW YORK (CNN Money) -- General Motors is poised to recapture the title of world's largest automaker, a distinction it lost to rival Toyota Motor when global auto sales collapsed in 2008.

GM nearly caught Toyota (TM) last year, finishing only 28,000 vehicles behind its Japanese rival. In the first quarter, it moved solidly ahead of Toyota, selling 2.2 million vehicles, an increase of 11%.

Toyota sales dropped 12% to 1.8 million vehicles, putting the company in third place behind GM and Volkswagen Group, which sold nearly 2 million vehicles. Ford Motor (F, Fortune 500) was No. 4 in global sales in the quarter with 1.4 million vehicles sold.

"Barring any outside, unexpected events, it's very likely GM will surpass Toyota," said Rebecca Lindland, director of strategic review for IHS Automotive, an industry research firm. "It might seem like they haven't earned it, that the runner next to them tripped and stumbled. But it is a reflection of all the work they've done that they're in contention to become No. 1 again."

GM has not released any sales targets for the company. But it is the leader in the two largest markets for auto sales, China and the United States, and it is gaining market share in both markets. Those two markets are also enjoying rising industry wide sales.

Lindland said GM will benefit more from the title than it did the last time it was No. 1. Then, the position was driven by the Detroit automaker selling many of its vehicles at a loss in order to keep plants operating, since it was burdened by labor contracts that limited its ability to close plants and cut staff it didn't need.

"If GM becomes No. 1 again, it'll do so profitably. That's what's exciting," she said.

Yes, the gossip is true! We have hired a female sales person at West Park, Joanne Lamy. Joanne refers to herself as, “A truck girl! My most favourite vehicle I've ever owned is my GM truck. I use it to pull my toys- sleds, quads and our 5th wheel... I actually come from a GM truck family. When we have a family gathering, there are about 8 GM trucks lined up in a row on the farm. It looks pretty cool!” Joanne does admit though, to thoughts of owning an SUV, “I think I'd like to own a Traverse. It would be nice sometimes for all the things you take with you when traveling with kids.” An obvious highlight for Joanne in the short time she has worked at West Park is her 3 deliveries in 2 weeks. Another highlight happened at her training session in Winnipeg last week. Joanne was the only one out of 40 people who got to sit in the all new 2011 Camaro Convertible. I asked her what she was looking forward to about working in sales at West Park. Joanne didn't have to think about her answer for even a moment, “I look forward to when Jer allows me to go for a Corvette drive... but I don't think I'm quite there yet!” I don't know, Joanne, maybe in this case you have to sell one to drive one, rather than drive one to sell one!

Meet Elaine in Our Service Department

This post is long overdue. We definitely have not forgotten to introduce Elaine to you, but because she works part time, our photographer has had a tough time capturing her smile on camera. Elaine began at West Park in 1980 as our receptionist when all accounting and book keeping was done manually and warranty was submitted using a Telex machine. She then moved to the cashier position and now she works in our service department part-time, where everything is fully computerized. When Elaine's not at work she is busy enjoying being a grandma! She said some highlights while at West Park have been the staff get-togethers, including bowling, baseball, golfing and the Goldeyes game. Elaine's favourite GM is the blue, 1967 Chevelle that Melvin used to own. It was their dating car. Now she really likes the Camaro. “I like it because it looks good, would be great for cruising, but not because it goes fast!” We don't know if the last part of her comment was because Melvin has possibly exceed her comfort level in a fast car?? For now Elaine is happy to be driving her Rendezvous. “I like it because it drives nice and it's spacious and reliable.”

All About Alec - Sales Advisor

Alec is the newest member of our sales team. He began working at West Park in October of 2009 but joined our sales team this last summer. Alec looks forward to meeting many new people and the opportunity to drive and get to know many different vehicles. One highlight that stands out in his mind is his first sale, a 2011 factory order Equinox! “And other than my first sale I would have to say another highlight was driving all the sports cars to and from the park for the show,” Alec recalls. When we asked him what his favourite vehicle is that he has owned, he laughed and said, “How do you have a favourite when it's been a van, a Mercury Villager, that was cheap and used and a '92 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight Regency Elite? A Bit About Brad - Sales Representative

Brad has been our sales representative for 4 years. Having owned over 20 vehicles thus far, he should have some good first-hand knowledge and opinions on which vehicle to drive. Brad bought his first vehicle 4 days before his 16th birthday. He and his mom went shopping for it together and they drove away with a 3 hundred dollar '63 Pontiac Strato Chief, 3-speed, 4 door. “It was a big boat... not cool! But it has fond memories, it was my dating car! At 100 000 kilometers I remember stopping the car to look at the odometer and recall the good times!” A favourite vehicle Brad has owned was his green '69 Chevelle. “I'm putting out a plea to help me find it,” Brad stated. “Laura will buy it back for me if we can locate it.” While owning the Chevelle, Brad drove a $400 clunker in the winters. Now his vehicle of choice is the Enclave in cocoa or diamond white. “I like its design and the Buick name. Lots About Lyn - Business Office Manager

Lyn joined our West Park team with 20 years of financial expertise under his belt in July of 2009. He transitioned very comfortably into his new role as our Business Office Manager. Lyn said, “I enjoy the variety in my job and the people I work with here. I also like the amount of tools I have to help put people into vehicles at a payment they can afford.” Lyn recalls a “highlight” while working at West Park, okay, maybe not a highlight but certainly one of those moments he won't soon forget. “I liked the way our row of Corvettes looked all lined up in the front of West Park. But what a sight it must have been when guys in their, shirts, ties and dress shoes were out there moving them inside for the winter and we were getting the Vettes stuck on the flat, bare parking lot.” Where is the camera when you needed one? One vehicle Lyn really likes is the Enclave. “It is luxurious, smooth and quiet and fits 7 people. We have 6 in our family and it is very comfortable.” When Lyn “grows up” he says he'd like a black CTS V. His favourite 4-wheeled vehicle was his first he ever owned, a '67 Ford Mustang (I can't believe we are mentioning that on our site), which he restored. Meet Myra - Cashier

After many years of working at financial institutions she said, “This is so different from where I had been and I'm enjoying the change, all of it. The Voice on the Telephone - Meet our Receptionist, Carissa

I'm guessing it's because she grew up with a dad who managed a tire shop, that Carrisa knows how to install her own winter tires. Impressive! Meet Mark - MTS Connect Sales Representative

Mark is our MTS Connect Store sales representative. He enjoys interacting with people, is motivated by a variety of tasks when working and loves technology and gadgets, etc. That means he's a perfect fit for this position because there are lots of gadgets to play with. A favourite of his is the new Smart phone – the HTC Android. Mark says, “This phone does EVERYTHING! It has cool apps and LOTS of them. It's FUN!” Mark joined our team in July and commented, “One of the highlights of my job so far, is getting people the product that suits their needs and then seeing them satisfied. I like to focus on customer service rather than push and sell.” And, even though Mark doesn't work directly with vehicles, since he is an employee of West Park's, we had to ask him the question, “What is your favourite GM vehicle?” His favourite is the Cadillac CTS and the Denali because they are sophisticated and classy.

Meet Roxanne - MTS Connect Store Manager

Roxanne joined our team as the MTS Connect Store Manager in mid August of this year. She has had many years of management and customer service experience at Burke's in Morris, which was owned by her family. Roxanne said it was time to try something different and give herself a new challenge. She commented, “I think my 'deer in headlights' look has finally gone away as I've become more familiar with everything that MTS Connect has to offer! I enjoy interacting with the many people that come into our store and the variety of tasks in my job.” Although she doesn't consider herself a die-hard techy, she said, “I love my Blackberry Storm. I could never go back to a regular cel phone. If I can figure it out, anyone can. It's really easy to use.” Other than the popular data devices, such as the HTS Android and Blackberries, Roxanne was impressed with the Military Grade phones. “Those phones are tough. You can do almost anything to them and they will keep going. Upon hearing Chris's comment, Richard put on his nicest, most sincere look and with a hint of sarcasm in his voice replied, “The highlight of my job is working with Wieler. Working with Wieler is always a fun time and an adventure!” (We'll translate that to mean, Richard also enjoys the people he works with and our 2 parts consultants certainly keep our parts department fun and interesting!) Richard also said he enjoys the opportunity to meet many new people through his work. Richard began working at West Park this year but had also worked a stint at West Park a few years earlier. He chuckled, “I missed it so much I came back!” When asked what his favourite GM vehicle would be, he replied, “The Camaro, but everybody says that, so I'm going to say (pausing to think...) an '81 Chevette, 4 on the floor. Those things just keep going and the fun times never end!” And as you've probably guessed by now the fun times never end when Richard is around!

Chris - Parts Consultant

Chris is one of our Parts Consultants. For 8 years now, West Park's walls have echoed with his contagious laugh! Chris likes it that his job is always different and new, “The variety keeps things interesting.” Within ear shot of Richard (our other parts consultant), Chris also said a highlight of his job was babysitting Richard every day. We'll translate that to mean that Chris enjoys the people he works with! (Stay tuned to hear Richard's comeback on that one!) The first vehicle Chris ever owned was a 1976 4-door Nova. “It was my first car and it was awesome! What didn't that car get used for?!” Chris recalled with a mischievous twinkle in his eye. “I also like the '67 Chevelle and '69 GTO Pontiac. Both have a very nice body style. I'd like those for my toys and then an extended or crew cab truck as my practical vehicle. When I have a million dollars I'd like it to be a Duramax.” (Chris, we recommend you go talk to our sales department about a Duramax... It may be more within reach than you are imagining!)

Info on Isaak - Technician

Isaak is another of our technicians. When asked what he liked most about his work, Isaak said, “I like working on the engines, that's what I do the most. I also like the people I work with.” In Isaak's two and a half years at West Park, a highlight for Isaak was when he had to replace a front cover and oil pump on a fire truck. “I had never done it before,” Isaak recalled, “but it all went smoothly and I completed the job in under ½ the allotted time. I like it when jobs turn out like that!” If it's anything mechanical, Isaak will find a way to do it and do it efficiently. Isaak's favourite GM is the Camaro in white with black stripes but he'd like an Equinox for his family.

Meet the Other Ed, Ed G. - Technician

Ed G. enjoys being a technician because it is the kind of job where in the 12 years he's worked here, no 2 days are alike, there isn't a set routine and you are always learning something new. One of the highlights of his job is when the shop gets new computers. “Having a new one always helps to get the jobs done faster and easier.” Ed's specialty is the ever changing, never easy world of vehicle electronics and wiring. He sorts through more miles of wire in a year than many techs do in a lifetime and has installed approximately 500 of the Manitoba Public Insurance Immobilizers. “Another highlight”, Ed says with his contagious smile and a mischievous twinkle in his eye, “is the people I get to work with. They are really fun guys and the spontaneous snowball fights and water fights that have erupted are good memories. And, everyone knows its not over until Terry wins... EVERY TIME!” Ed's favourite GM vehicle is a yellow Corvette but he would also love to own a big truck. Ed said, “As for vehicles I've owned, I don't really have a favourite so far. I'm hoping my favourite will be the one I just bought!”

John R. - Technician

John R. is another one of our technicians who has worked at West Park for a long time. He said, “My career start date was carved into a tablet with a hammer and chisel. It was back in the day when cars came in black and had Model T written on the side!” Okay... really, it was in 1979, one year after finishing high school. In his 30 some years of working at West Park, John has obviously seen technicians come and go. He says he has lots of fun memories of his many colleagues and really misses them when they leave. A highlight for John as a technician is the opportunity to work on many local hot rods and classic cars, which is largely due to having the Legends Car Club in our town. He comments, “It's always a thrill to do a wheel alignment or some other work on these vehicles.” John has seen many changes take place in the shop itself. One highlight is when he got the Front End Machine. It simplified an otherwise more tedious job that required measuring and reading degrees using levels and tape measures. The biggest evolutions John has witnessed in the shop are the advancements in electronics, both in the tools being used and the vehicles themselves. “There is always something changing and something new to learn.” When asked what his favourite vehicle was, John asked, “Two-wheeled or four? Because I really like the '77 Harley that I've custom built with an 88 cubic inch stroker. Maybe not the most practical, but that's my toy! For a favourite practical 4-wheeler I like the Buick Enclave because it is roomy, handles well, it is fun and versatile with 2 wheel drive/all wheel drive options. An Introduction to Salih - Technician

Salih moved to Canada and joined our reconditioning department only 3 years ago. Before that he briefly lived in Egypt but is originally from Sudan. While here, Salih has been launched into a very steep learning curve. He is learning to live and work in an environment where he says that everything is “100 percent different” from Africa, including a new language! Salih laughed, “Communication problems can make funny stuff happen at work every day! The guys I work with in the shop are very fun, too. Every day I come to work excited and I leave excited. I love it that every day I am still learning something new.” Salih's positive attitude toward his work shows in his finished product. He thrives on detailing vehicles, especially when he can turn something that looks a little old and dirty into something that looks like new again. Salih exclaimed, “I hate dirt, in and on vehicles, and try to get rid of every last piece of it!” When asked to name his favourite vehicle he said, “The yellow Corvette convertible, but my new Chevy Uplander is very good for my family!”

West Park Motors began doing business 42 years ago this month when Dick Penner and Henry Stoesz formed a partnership to purchase the GM dealership from Dave Beckert in September of 1968. Bob Stoesz, Cornie Peters and Bernie Klassen were part of the original West Park team in 1968 and are still with us today. During those 42 years, West Park has been incredibly blessed with loyal customers and staff who have been the reason for any successes we’ve enjoyed. In celebration, we would appreciate any photos you might have of our building, vehicles, etc. circa 1968. We would also love to post pictures on this site of any vehicles purchased at West Park over the years – especially pictures of some of the unique vehicles we have sold or pictures of a West Park vehicle in an interesting place. The Artist Behind Our Water Feature

This last weekend we were treated to a fairytale experience at the home of Todd and Lisa Braun's near Altona. Todd is the artist who created the beautiful rock water feature standing near West Park's front doors. Clients and friends of Todd and Lisa's spent the evening wandering along stone paths that lead us underneath massive stone gates and past beautifully carved basins and other stone sculptures, all glowing from the setting sun and later, the candle light of the carved stone lanterns and bonfires. Music lingered throughout the garden, serenading people as they taste-tested one of Lisa's many delectable creations. We truly felt like we had escaped to a secret world. They conduct tours of the gardens for a small fee and you may be able to twist Todd's arm to sell you some of his beautiful creations on display or customize a piece just for you. Elemental Stone, Todd's business, will soon have a website but it is currently under construction. If you are interested in contacting Todd and Lisa you can e-mail them at element@sdnet.ca. Tidbits on Terry - Technician

Terry keeps things lively in the shop. He puts a positive spin on almost any situation and is known for his perseverance. Terry began his career at West Park in April of 1994. At the time he was working beside his father, Henry, another technician in our shop. One and a half years later, exactly 15 years ago today, Terry received the tragic news that his father had passed away in a car accident. Terry counts those 1 and a half years of working with his father a total blessing and privilege. The staff working with Henry at that time remember him as a gentle, soft-spoken guy. He was one of those genuinely nice people who was well-liked by all. Henry was one of the best heavy duty truck technicians in southern Manitoba who was always willing to put in the extra hours to get a customer on the road, especially during beet season. We still miss his smiles and good, clean (sometimes practical) jokes!

When Terry was asked what his favourite practical GM vehicle is, he replied with seriousness in his face, "A Camaro...(pause for laughter from bystanders)... What are you laughing for?" he asked. "It's got 4 seats. My wife would even agree with me! My son thinks we should drive a Bumble Bee." For Terry's impractical vehicle he'd like to own the Corvette he found in a Corvette magazine as a kid. It's a '69 Corvette L88 in black with a 427 all-aluminum engine. Terry still has the picture stashed away in his Corvette magazine collection.

A moment that Terry remembers vividly at West Park is standing in the doorway of the garage watching a huge lightning storm when suddenly a tree across the parking lot was struck. The light hurt the eyes and when the thunder struck, everyone jumped 3-4 feet off the floor. All batteries were charged, cars and people!

What's Up With Willy - Technician

In 2008 Willy along with his wife and children made the big move from Germany to Canada and he began working at West Park as a technician shortly there after. Willy was taken aback by the size of everything in a Canadian shop compared to those in Germany. Willy stated, “The engines and the trucks I work on here are all so much bigger. Everything is different. That's the best part of my job. I'm always learning and everything is new and exciting. With GM I've had to learn a new computer system and while learning all of these new things I'm also learning a new language!”. Willy’s cheerful ways helped him fit right in with the rest of the technicians at West Park, even before he had a full grasp of English.

Aunt Olly is Treated to a Surprise

If you are in your 40s or 50s and from this area you probably still have fond memories of scurrying home after school, grabbing a brownie and milk and then cozying in close to a cranked up radio, just in time to join Aunt Olly, Tall Fireman Paul and other friends on her program. Former radio personality, Aunt Olly (Olly Penner) of Altona is retired, enjoying life, and just enjoyed a ride in a Pontiac Solstice convertible, supplied by West Park Motors, with former CFAM co-worker, David Wiebe. The ride was arranged when David spotted a red 1966 Pontiac convertible a few weeks ago. This car reminded him of the time when fellow CFAM employee, Sam Schellenberg had given Aunt Olly a ride in news anchor, Harv Kroeker’s candy apple red Pontiac convertible about 40 years ago. After many years of making children smile and surprising them over the radio by telling them where they would find their birthday presents, it was Aunt Olly's turn for a surprise. She had no idea what to expect when David called to say he was coming to pick her up… the convertible was a TOTAL surprise and she LOVED it!

Meet Edward - Technician

Edward joined our staff as a technician in March of 2006. He moved here from the Philippines, where he also worked in the automotive field. Working at a GM dealer in Canada has been a completely different experience than what Edward was used to back home. He is currently enrolled in the GM Automotive Service Educational Program (ASEP), alternating between work and school, and says the part of his job that he enjoys the most is that he is always learning something new. "It's been a challenge but fun," Edward commented. Edward has put some creativity into the paint job on his current car but in his dreams he pictures himself driving a Camaro just like Bumble Bee from Transformers.

Kelly - Technician

Have you seen the snazzy blue and white '70 Chevelle SS cruising through town? Maybe, but only if the weather conditions were just right, because this is Kelly's "sugar car"! If he were to also own a new sports car, Kelly would tearing up the roads in a red Z06 Corvette, "because they're fast, of course!" In the almost 20 years that Kelly has worked at West Park, a project that sticks out in his mind as a highlight is when he worked on a '55 Chevy that was restored and hot-rodded. Kelly installed a high-stall torque converter for faster launch. You can always tell when Kelly is working because you can hear his cheerful laugh across the shop. He knows how to have fun while getting the job done!

Dave - Technician

Dave likes to go FAST, although he admits his "top speed" has come down with age. Knowing this, you can probably guess what his all time favourite GM vehicle would be... a new Z06 Corvette in yellow. His '81 Camaro wasn't exactly a Corvette but Dave said it was still fun to drive and sounded good. Dave began working at West Park on March 18 in 1992. The staff Christmas outings to Grand Forks are some of Dave's favourite memories while working at West Park. When Dave's not looking after customer vehicles he is busy building and flying radio controlled planes. He has even built one out of the corrugated plastic pole signs that GM sends us for promos!

Sunflower Festival

We just finished enjoying a fun-filled weekend at the Sunflower Festival and the weather couldn't have been better. It was hot and sunny all weekend long! We applaud the many volunteers who made the festival a big success. Thank you to the people who stopped to say “hello” at the venues where West Park had vehicles on display. A Little About Lisa - Service Advisor

Lisa is West Park's Service Advisor. She's one of the smiling faces that will greet you as you pull into our drive-through service bay. Lisa joined our team in May of this year, just in time to tear up the go-carting track with our staff at Speed World, one of her West Park highlights so far. She says the best part about her job in the short time she's been with us, is the people she works with. People who know Lisa, know she is not a "van kinda girl" (as she put it), even though that's what she is currently driving. Lisa used to drive a GMC Jimmy and liked it so she wishes to own something like it again some day.

Meet Marsha - Warranty Administrator and Closeout Clerk

Marsha is our Warranty Administrator and Closeout Clerk. Although Marsha is badly out-numbered by the guys in the service department at West Park, she stated, “The best part of my job is working with some really great co-workers and dealing with customers.” Her history with GM started right after high school when she worked at a GM dealership in Alberta and donned some overalls, doing oil changes on stock units! Marsha remembers when she came out from underneath a vehicle and a customer exclaimed, “You're a girl!” Not surprising then, that this girl was willing to accept a position at West Park almost 9 years ago, even after seeing what would be her office. It was not a cushy space. Marsha says, “My #1 highlight at West Park was when we did the renovation and I got a new office. I got to move out of the old closet!” When Marsha moved from Alberta to Manitoba she was driving a little 1981 Chevrolet Chevette. This may not have been her favourite GM vehicle but it ought to be a close second! Her little Chevette moved her from Alberta to Manitoba in the dead of winter and it never left her stranded. That's impressive. “The Enclave is one of my favourite GMs now. It's classy, stylish looking, handles well and is roomy.”

Cornie - Shop Foreman and West Park "Senior"

Cornie is the last of our "senior" members to be introduced. He also began working at West Park in the fall of 1968, when West Park was opened. Cornie was a technician until 1973, then the Shop Foreman, and in 1977 became the Service Manager. Several years later, when many things were becoming more computerized and less hands-on for the Service Managers, Cornie realized he preferred the more hands-on work. He made a switch back to Shop Foreman, working together with the technicians to solve challenging problems.  Some of these solutions have since been implemented across the country by GM.

After being at West Park for this many years, Cornie has seen many changes take place in West Park as a business and also in the vehicles that come through the shop.  He is always eager to continue learning in order to stay current in new technologies, tools and procedures. During the warmest months of 1973, when our vehicles were not ordered stock with air conditioning, Cornie installed 23 air conditioning units! After the realization of air conditioning's quickly growing popularity, in 1974 about 80% of the vehicles West Park stocked came with air conditioning and West Park became the first air conditioning repair shop in Southern Manitoba. Even working on ignitions has changed many times throughout the years, from points ignitions, to high energy ignitions, to computer controlled ignitions. Some of the vehicles that stand out in Cornie's mind when he thinks of the evolution of vehicles over his career are gravel trucks, beet trucks, school buses, CSP Foods trucks, and Freightway trucks.  Even the price of vehicles has changed immensely! Cornie chuckles, "The first GM vehicle I ever purchased when I was just 17, was a 1964, red, hard- top Impala for $2495. In 1966 I bought a new Pontiac Grand Parisienne for $3800.  I got married that year and used this car for my honeymoon. It was one of only two like it in Southern Manitoba. In 1971 I bought my next vehicle for $4100 and my vehicle after that, only 4 years later - the price doubled!" With the evolution of vehicles there have also been many changes required in the tools used at the shop. For example, when Cornie started working in the shop there was only 1 hoist and it was used primarily for service jobs and tire repairs. All other repairs were done on jack stands. Today we have a total of 8 hoists in our shop which are used for almost all types of service work.

Some of Cornie's highlights from his years at West Park are the staff and family Christmas weekends in Grand Forks years ago, the ever changing work in the shop and the many people that he has meets while working at West Park.

Since we've come up with a "retirement project" for our other "senior" employees, it only seems reasonable to come up with one for Cornie, too, that is IF we ever let him retire!  We're dreaming of a finely tuned, late 60s muscle car and we need someone who has first- hand experience to get it running the way it did when it rolled off the assembly line.

Our Last New Pontiac Sale

A point in West Park's history... As part of its restructuring last year, GM announced that the Pontiac brand would be discontinued. After selling Pontiacs since we first opened in 1968, yesterday we sold what will most likely be our last new Pontiac - a 2010 Vibe.

A Bit About Bernie - Technician

Bernie is another one of our “senior” employees. Again, not because of his age but because he has been at West Park since its beginning! Bernie has been one of our technicians for 42 years, preparing our new and used vehicles for the road. That makes for over 10 000 vehicles Bernie has worked on. He has often sacrificed his lunch hour or worked evenings if need be to get customers on the road in their new vehicle. Having spent that many years in our shop as a technician and having worked on that many vehicles, it is interesting to find out Bernie's pick as one of his favourite, “practical” GM vehicles. Any guesses? It's the Chevy Equinox! He likes the Equinox because it is good-looking, practical, easy to get in and out and affordable. Another of Bernie's GM favourites is the 1956 Chevy Bel Air, 2 door, hard top which he owned. It was a sharp-looking turquoise and white car and according to Bernie, “It was fast!” And how could a guy not pick this car as one of his favourites when it was the beauty that took him and his new bride on their honeymoon?! We haven't talked to Bernie about this yet, but wouldn't it be great if when he “retires” from West Park, he start detailing, preparing and restoring some old GM vehicles to begin a West Park collection while Bob is working on our history album? These guys will never be allowed to leave!

Our Fixed Operations Manager - Bob

Meet our Fixed Operations Manager, Bob. Bob's first day of work at West Park was on August 31, 1968 at precisely 6:05 a.m., around the time when West Park first opened its doors! Through his many years at West Park he has witnessed the evolution of our dealership in all areas. Bob has seen numerous building renovations and expansions, helped West Park become the 1st rural GM dealer to computerize accounting and parts inventory in 1977 and has gone through the challenges of many new parts inventory control and communications systems, from the Cardex to “live inventory control” systems, with numerous variations in between. Communication is another area that has changed immensely, from when Bob first phoned in the parts orders, to the use of telex, then fax, then satellite, and now the use of email. Speaking of communication, quite likely it was Bob who sold you your first cellular phone (if you were from the Altona area) when cellulars were gaining popularity, which contributed to the development of our MTS Connect store today. When asked to recall a few of his most memorable moments at West Park, Bob laughed, “There are so many memorable moments after this many years, it’s hard to pick just a few.” Bob traveled to places such as Winnipeg, London ON, Dayton OH, and Atlanta GA to attend several schools, forums and meetings for parts inventory. He also had the opportunity to tour the factory in Oshawa and then drive trucks home, piggy-backed up to 3 per load. Some perks of Bob's job have also included GM trips to the Caribbean and Southern California, a Rogers/Cantel trip to Jamaica and an MTS Grey Cup game in Vancouver. Other highlights Bob recalls are the West Park staff and family Christmas weekends away, playing on a West Park sponsored baseball team, water-skiing with staff and families at Cavalier, ND and kart racing with staff members at Speed World. He also helped build and drive the West Park sponsored Hobby Stock race car, #23, at the Winnipeg Speedway in 1974. We must add that he finished 4th in points that season, receiving the “Best Appearance” trophy for the year and driver “Rookie of the Year” award in the Hobby Stock class! Interestingly, this talented race car driver also participated in the West Park Motors Choir and even did a few gigs publicly! “The highlights over the years all have one common component, and that is meeting and working with people. I am fortunate to have developed many friendships and acquaintances over the years with fellow staff members, customers, factory representatives, and suppliers. That’s what makes it work for me!”

With Bob's roots so deeply planted here, we'll suggest he write a West Park history book in his retirement and rummage through West Park's dusty box of memories, the thousands of old photos that are sitting in our attic!

Meet Ray - West Park's Dealer/Owner

Ray began working at West Park in June of 1973, one week after getting married to the love of his life, so he's just starting his 38th year here. Ray was a sales consultant for roughly 5 years, then the sales manager for 7 years prior to becoming the dealer 25 years ago. Although 37 years makes him one of the “senior” people on staff, Bob Stoesz, Cornie Peters and Bernie Klassen have all been here since West Park opened the doors in the fall of 1968. It was hard for Ray to pick one memorable moment out of a life time of experiences at West Park, but his memorable moments would certainly include events that staff have been able to share together, from weddings and anniversaries to the births of children and grandchildren. There was even a West Park band/choir that “performed” at some of these events when they were all a little younger and crazier! One thing Ray enjoys about his work is the people. He said, "West Park has the pleasure of dealing with a large number of people who keep our work enjoyable and interesting. Because no two people are the same, each encounter is new and exciting." The first GM vehicle Ray owned was a mid 60’s Pontiac Parisienne. He remembers shopping for that car with his dad and negotiating an $800 purchase price. "It was a big boat – but it was MY big boat," Ray recalls with a smile. When asked what his favourite GM vehicle is, Ray replied, "Over the years GM has built a lot of great cars and trucks, too many for me to select just one favourite, including the 1955 Chevy Bel Air convertible, Camaro, Corvette (pick a year), early 50’s Chevy pickups with the corner windows and I could name many more. One thing these vehicles all have in common is great looks and great styling."

West Park Sports Car Rally

We had the privilege of taking a group of our sports car customers on a rally to north eastern Minnesota from June 12-14. On Saturday at 7:30 a.m. Ken and Yvonne were the first to show up at West Park. Yvonne said she arrived the first because she was the most excited to go. Four cars left from Altona, an orange Camaro, silver Camaro, yellow Corvette convertible and a silver Corvette convertible. The other 2, a yellow Corvette convertible and a yellow SSR, met up with us in Warroad, Minnesota. Erv's car saw rain for the first time which we think almost did him in, but Lorraine was still allowed to ride inside the car rather than sit on the roof with an umbrella! People were introduced to each other at the gas station in Warroad, grabbed their coffee and then we began our cruise as a group of 6 cars.

Little Sienna was a passenger in the silver Camaro for this trip. Her parents hoped she would be seen and not heard, so as not to cause any disruptions to this getaway. She ended up being some of the entertainment on our trip, was a sports car fanatic and met all the criteria of an excellent baby!

Our lunch stop on Saturday was at Rosalie's Restaurant in Baudette, MN. This was the only restaurant we hadn't visited before but it was recommended by the local chamber and we were not disappointed. The food was delicious and the portions generous. This was the start to a weekend filled with good food, great roads and entertainment. This was also the first place where we treated ourselves to a warm bowl of Chicken Wild Rice soup, perfect for our not-so-perfect weather.

We drove a little farther and then took our next coffee break at Lake Kabetogama. Instead of a "tail-gate parties" we had "trunk parties" where juice, pop, water and snacks were served.

We toured an iron ore mine in Sudan, MN. Our tour guide was great and the mine is pretty amazing. The ride down the mine shaft was quite exhilarating. We packed about 17 people into a 6-foot square metal box and then plunged down 2400 feet, rattling and shaking in the dark to the excavation site. Although the elevator travels at 10 mph, it felt a lot faster!

Our first night was spent at the Ely Lodge in Ely, Minnesota. This is where we had our dinner and breakfast on Sunday. And guess what they had on their menu? That's right, Chicken and Wild Rice soup!

One of our memories of Ely Lodge will unfortunately be the game of Chess that Natasha volunteered to play against Len in the foyer before leaving that morning. All bystanders were nearly choking, trying to hold in their laughter and refrain from giving advice as Natasha's red pieces were nabbed off the board one after another. It was painful!

This is the perfect road to take if you are ever looking for a twisting, smooth, scenic drive. It is Hwy 1 from Ely to Lake Superior. Then we took Hwy 61 which follows the north shore of Lake Superior.

Our lunch stop on Sunday was at Betty's Pies on Hwy 61, just north of Two Harbors, a place you cannot drive past without stopping. They have a large menu, a fun retro atmosphere and a million pies to choose from. You can even have your pie blended into a pie milkshake as Lorne and Jeremy did.

A little farther northeast up the road is Split Rock Light House. Our group took the tour which normally would give you a great view of Lake Superior but unfortunately our view from the top of the light house was thick fog. After touring the lighthouse, some people also went for a hike at Gooseberry Falls.

Sunday evening we arrived at Grand Superior Lodge. This is where we had dinner and spent the night. We rented a log home to hang out as a group before retiring to our own rooms. Oh, and we shouldn't forget to mention that this restaurant also served Chicken and Wild Rice soup! This became a bit of a group joke on our trip. EVERYBODY in Minnesota seems to have "Soup du Jour... Chicken and Wild Rice"!

On Monday morning we ate breakfast on the deck of Grand Superior Lodge, over-looking the lake. It was a cool and fresh morning that started looking promising with the sun shining on the lake but once again the fog rolled in.

This is a scenic rest area near the tunnels on Hwy 61, just north of Two Harbors.

Our next stop was Duluth, Minnesota. We spent time doing our own activities around Canal Park and then met for lunch at Grandma's.

Jer and Sienna were brave souls as they posed for a picture with the seagulls nearly landing on their heads. The birds had a bit of popcorn as their bribe.

Lorraine asked if they had a Chicken and Wild Rice soup. Not only did they have Chicken and Wild Rice Soup, it turned out their soup was FAMOUS Chicken and Wild Rice soup. She actually ordered it and we burst out laughing!

Other than wishing for different weather, our trip was excellent. We were with a great group of people and enjoyed riding with so many awesome Chevy sports cars! This is something we would like to try again in the future and we plan to do more 1-day rallies, as we have in the past. We would love to have you join us next time! All you need is a sports car you have purchased from West Park Motors in Altona! It's that easy!

Speed World with the Staff

Torrential rains drenched all of us as we made a mad dash from our vehicles into Speed World. We had just set out the Boston pizzas, ready to start our party when the power failed and we were left in the stuffy, blackened mezzanine of Speed World. We attempted to eat by cel phone light for about 10 minutes while the Speed World staff located a flashlight for us. It took about half an hour for the power to resume and then it was racing time!

Drivers were given their instructions on what to do (and more importantly what not to do) in order to win the 45-minute Le Mans-style race.

Ed G. was spotted giving teammate, Lyn, the final race instructions and reminding him not to text while driving.

The race was on and the competition was fierce as rubber hit the road.

Teammates watched, cheered and kept an eye on the TV screen for updated results.

Despite a lap deduction due to Melvin's speedy entry into the pits, nearly taking out the race official, Chad, Elisabeth and Melvin took home the checkered flag by half a lap!
