Vic Loewen, on behalf of the
team at West Park Motors, presents a cheque to Joe Braun in front of the
Bergthal School in Neubergthal.
The funds will be used for
the restoration work that is ongoing at the school. The exterior part of the
restoration (roof, siding and windows) was completed last year and now
work is underway on the interior of the building.
This
building, originally the Altbergthal School, was constructed in the late 1800’s
/ early 1900’s on a site three miles west of Altona. In 1982 the building was
moved to Altona and more recently it was moved again to Neubergthal to be
preserved as a historic building. The hope is to use one of the original
classrooms as such while the other smaller room will house an interpretive
display depicting the rural school experience.
In addition to the school
project, work is on-going at the Eddie Schmidt Education Resource Centre as
well as on another private house barn that is being restored at the south end
of Neubergthal.
Neubergthal is
one of the best-preserved single street Mennonite villages in North America.
The village layout and architecture was developed over centuries of Mennonite
life in Europe and Russia. For more information on the village itself, visit
their web site at http://www.neubergthal.com/
